Parking Lots - Parking Geometrics

Architect Training Course
Parking lots are often designed based on out-dated spacing criteria. Cars made in recent years are larger than those made in the early 1990s and smaller than those made several decades ago. How large should the parking spaces be? How much space is required between the rows? These and other questions concerning the geometrics of parking lots are addressed in this 1-hour interactive online course. The text of the course is taken from a recent publication by the National Parking Association.

There will be a test included at the end of this course. You must have Flash Player Version 7 or higher to view some parts of this course. We also recommend you view this course in Internet Explorer.

At the conclusion of the course, you will understand:

  • Some of the changes that have occurred over the last 20 years with the concept of a design vehicle for parking spaces
  • How the use of the parking lot affects the width of the parking stalls
  • The relationship between parking angle, aisle width, and overall width of a parking module
  • The impacts of curbs, walls and light poles on parking spaces
  • Why the concept of small-vehicle parking spaces doesnÆt work and is no longer recommended

To comply with AIA and state requirements, all new online courses must be evaluated to confirm the assigned credit hour value.
